General Power of Attorney (GPOA)

Appoint a Trusted Agent to Act on Your Behalf.

A General Power of Attorney (GPOA) is a powerful legal instrument that allows you to appoint a trusted individual or entity (referred to as an “agent” or “attorney-in-fact”) to represent you in a wide range of legal, business, and financial matters, when you’re unable to be physically present.

What Is a General Power of Attorney?

A General POA authorizes your appointed agent to act on your behalf in nearly all affairs, including but not limited to:

  • Managing bank accounts and financial transactions

  • Signing contracts and agreements

  • Buying and selling movable assets (vehicles, shares, etc.)

  • Establishing and managing businesses

  • Receiving payments and issuing acknowledgments

  • Handling administrative and legal procedures with authorities

Note: A General POA does not authorize the sale or purchase of real estate. For such transactions, a Special POA is legally required in the UAE.

When Should You Use a General POA?

A General POA is ideal if you:

  1. Frequently travel or reside outside the UAE

  2. Are unable to personally handle business or financial operations

  3. Want to delegate authority to a trusted individual or firm to act on your behalf

  4. Need a legally valid document to ensure seamless management of your affairs during your absence

Trust Matters

Because a General POA grants broad authority, it should only be issued to someone you completely trust. Your agent will have the legal power to make decisions and sign documents as if they were you. If you only need to authorize someone for a specific task, such as selling a vehicle or representing you in court. It is safer to issue a Special Power of Attorney instead.

Legal Considerations in Dubai & UAE

  • UAE notaries may not accept a General POA for sensitive transactions such as real estate transfers.

  • Some banks or government departments may require limited or task-specific POAs, even if a General POA is available.

  • GPOAs can be valid for both UAE and international use, depending on how they are drafted, translated, and notarized.
