Power of Attorney for Marriage

A Power of Attorney for Marriage is a legal document that allows the father or legal guardian of the bride to appoint another person to act on his behalf during the marriage registration at the Family Court in the UAE. This representative will appear in court to give consent for the marriage in cases where the guardian cannot attend in person.

When Is a POA for Marriage Needed?

You will need a POA for Marriage if:

• The father or legal guardian of the bride is outside the UAE

• The guardian is unable to appear at the court due to health, travel, or other valid reasons

• The marriage registration must take place in the UAE without delay

In such cases, the guardian can appoint another male representative, who must be at least 21 years old, to represent him and give official consent for the marriage on his behalf.

Who Can Be Appointed?

The person acting as the guardian’s representative under the POA must:

• Be male

• Be at least 21 years of age

• Be trusted by the guardian, as they will represent him legally at the court

• Be willing and able to attend the marriage appointment at the Family Court

Legal Requirements in the UAE

To be accepted by UAE courts, a Power of Attorney for Marriage must:

• Be clearly worded to authorize representation for marriage consent

• Be notarized in the UAE, or if issued abroad:

  • Notarized in the country of origin

  • Attested by the UAE Embassy or Consulate

  • Attested by the UAE Ministry of Foreign Affairs (MOFA)

  • Legally translated into Arabic by a certified translator
